3 Tips to learn Spanish fast

Here are three tips to learn Spanish fast that can help you be more efficient while acquiring the language.

Tips to learn Spanish fast: Jump in the pool, start speaking Spanish

Why are there students with an almost intermediate level of Spanish, who barely speak the language and there are complete beginner students who after 6 or 7 individual classes can speak Spanish?

Well, many reasons can explain this.

But today, I am here to give you a tip:

Play with the language.

It is fun!

When you are in class with me, it is a safe and relaxed environment.

We will laugh often and have a good time, while you learn Spanish, yes?

Well, think of speaking the language as if it were a game.

Try using the Spanish version of that word you have in your head.

I do it a lot with English!

How is “optimista” in English? Optimistic!

How is “operación” in English? Operation!

How is “constipado” in English? Constipated??? 😆

What’s the worst that can happen if you make a mistake?

Nothing!

The important thing is to start using the words you have, put them together and communicate messages in Spanish.

Therefore, the first of my tips to learn Spanish fast is play with the language, have fun, jump in the pool and start speaking in Spanish.

Tips to learn Spanish fast: If you don’t use it, you lose it

60% of my students do not live in Spain, therefore, you are not surrounded by the Spanish language and you likely do not need to use it daily.

In a Spanish class, with a student who has been learning Spanish with me for 3 years, from scratch, and who currently has a B1 (intermediate) level, the following occurred:

Student: Este chico es alto, moreno, guapo, delgado, tiene la ….. Tiene la…. Oh,… Gloria, no recuerdo “skin” en español.

Gloria: Piel

Student: ¡Piel! Arrrrgggg

Gloria: No te preocupes, hace unos días yo no recordaba “leche” en inglés. Milk!

Estudiante: Tú sabes Gloria… If you don’t use it, you lose it!

What a great phrase, huh?!

If you don’t use it, you lose it!

And that’s right, it happens with many skills that we learn: like playing an instrument, playing chess, knitting, speaking in public… You need to put into practice the theory you learn, you need to practise, use your skill… Because if not… It gets rusty… You can even lose the skill!

So let’s be realistic and practical with today’s tip.

What can you do to avoid losing the Spanish you have learnt?

Fortunately, nowadays, you can do many things without leaving home.

I am such an example,  with my passion for learning English. So I’m going to share with you what I do with my English, which you can apply  for your Spanish:

  • * Watch series on Netflix in Spanish.
  • * Read books (adapted to your level) in Spanish.
  • * Listen to podcasts adapted to your level or a topic you like in Spanish.
  • * Talk to your Hispanic best friend on Zoom at least once a month.
  • * Watch videos on YouTube about a hobby that you really enjoy in Spanish.
  • * Follow a Hispanic character on social media (Instagram, TikTok, Facebook…). He/She can be a famous person, a singer, an actor, a writer, a musician…

All this without leaving home!

So the second of my tips to learn Spanish fast is use your Spanish with little things, because if you don’t use it, you lose it.

The fifth skill

Traditionally, when we learn languages, we work on these four skills:

  1. Reading
  2. Listening
  3. Writing
  4. Speaking

Afterwards, different schools, methodologies and teachers… talk about other cultural, functional skills…

So, since I’m also a teacher… I also have my fifth skill!

The 5th Skill, by Gloria Pérez

😂

Learning to read, actively  listen, write and speak in Spanish is essential, and it is what we constantly do in our classes.

But one very important thing you have to learn in this case is:

How to use what you have to communicate a message in Spanish?

In your native language, if you want to get from point A to point B, it is very easy for you, you can choose different ways to express a phrase, an idea, an opinion… You can even be funny and make jokes!

But in Spanish, depending on your level, to get from point A to point B, you don’t have that many options. Sometimes, you only have one or two options.

Always think that the important thing is to communicate your message simply and clearly.

Therefore, the third of my tips to learn Spanish fast is to develop the 5th skill and learn how to communicate in Spanish with the (many or few) resources you have.

Slowly but surely

Wanting to learn Spanish quickly is something that many students pursue when they start their classes. However, the secret to learning Spanish (or any other skill) is consistency.

And if in addition to being constant, you apply the tips that your teacher gives you, success in your learning of Spanish is assured.
