Watching the best shows for learning Spanish will be enjoyable – time will fly, you’ll be relaxed… while your brain, almost passively, absorbs the language as if it were hearing a familiar melody in a song.
This mini full-immersion in the Spanish language, spending about 45-50 minutes (the length of an episode) surrounded by the language may feel slightly uncomfortable at first, until you get used to it, but little by little, that slight discomfort from your eagerness to understand each and every single word will be replaced by your interest in knowing how the story continues.
Furthermore, you’ll find that you can easily follow the plot without needing to understand every word the characters say.
In this article’s selection of series, there are some excellent 2024 shows that I highly recommend because you’re very likely to enjoy them immensely.

Best shows for learning Spanish: The top 1 for weeks
We’ll start with four of the best shows for learning Spanish, all of which consistently ranked number one in the Spanish rankings of most-watched series week after week. These are series of excellent quality, both in terms of the stories they tell and the overall quality you see on screen.
- The Asunta Case (El Caso Asunta)
It’s a true-crime drama miniseries inspired by the story of Asunta Basterra, a case that gripped and shocked Spanish society. On September 21, 2013, Rosario Porto and Alfonso Basterra reported the disappearance of their 13-year-old daughter, Asunta. Hours later, Asunta’s lifeless body was found near a road on the outskirts of Santiago de Compostela (Galicia).
The police investigation quickly pointed to Rosario and Alfonso, the little girl’s parents, as possible suspects in her murder.
The series tells the story of this crime drama in six episodes. The lead actors are Candela Peña and Tristán Ulloa, whose performances can be considered one of the best of their careers, a fact recognised with several awards and accolades.
- The Gardener (El Jardinero)
It’s a thriller miniseries that tells the story of “La China” Jurado and her son, Elmer. They both live in Pontevedra (Galicia), and La China runs the family business, a plant nursery, with the help of her son Elmer, who seems to have a special talent for plants.
Elmer suffers from a series of psychiatric and psychological problems due to an accident he had years ago, and as a result, he is unable to feel emotions.
His mother, taking advantage of this situation, sets up an organized crime business in which her son is a hitman who kills for hire.
The problem arises when Elmer falls in love with one of the victims he’s supposed to kill: an elementary school teacher named Violet. Elmer doesn’t realize that what he’s feeling is love, since it’s completely new to him. And that’s where the trouble begins.
The main actors are Mexican actress Cecilia Suárez as “La China,” Álvaro Rico as Elmer, and Catalina Sopelana as Violet.
- Alpha Males (Machos Alfa)
This comedy is now in its fourth season (and a fifth has been confirmed) and tells the stories of four male friends, all around 40 years old, who find themselves in a world where patriarchy is coming to an end. They are confronted with new concepts such as “deconstructing their masculinity.”
The four friends, Pedro, Luis, Raúl, and Santi, feel lost in the new era of female empowerment and struggle to adapt, each in their own way, experiencing funny, wacky, and absurd situations, as well as stories that make the audience reflect, questioning whether some of the steps society is taking are in the right direction.
The four main actors in the series are veteran actors in the Spanish film and acting scene: Gorka Otxoa, Fele Martínez, Fernando Gil and Raúl Tejón.
- Animal
This hilarious comedy series, starring the great Spanish actor Luis Zahera, tells the story of Antón, a veterinarian from rural Galicia. A simple country man, burdened by debt and financial problems, who is forced to work at his niece Uxía’s veterinary clinic.
Now working at a private veterinary clinic, Antón begins to encounter situations he never imagined in his quiet rural life: dyslexic pets, pets experiencing phantom pregnancies, pets with anxiety problems, pets with cosmetic needs, like having their nails painted…

Mystery, intrigue, murders, robberies…
Let’s get to the best shows for learning Spanish in 2024 and 2025 with the tags #mystery, #intrigue, #murders, #robbery… Series that will undoubtedly hook you from the beginning and with which you will learn a lot of vocabulary on this topic in Spanish (hopefully you won’t need it!).
- The Snow Girl 2 (La Chica de Nieve 2)
This thriller series is based on the novels of the same name by writer Javier Castillo (whom I personally love).
The series tells the story of investigative journalist Miren Rojo (played by the great actress Milena Smit) who becomes involved in cases where, even at the risk of her own safety, she will get to the bottom of the mystery.
In this second season, Miren receives a chilling photograph of a gagged young woman with an enigmatic message. Miren’s investigation centers on an elite school where two young girls have disappeared and been murdered. Jaime, her fellow journalist, will help her with the investigation.
- The Crystal Cuckoo (El Cuco de Cristal)
Another thriller series, and another adaptation of a novel of the same name by Javier Castillo (he’s a very good writer).
While “The Snow Girl” already has two installments, “The Crystal Cuckoo” is a six-episode miniseries that tells the story of young doctor Clara Merlo, whose life is saved by a heart transplant.
Clara wants to know who the donor is, the one who has kept her alive today. This obsessive search for her donor leads her to a small town where she becomes entangled in unsolved mysteries and dark stories.
- Berlin
The most charismatic character from the legendary series “Money Heist” now has his own show: Berlin. This giant among giants (both Berlin and Pedro Alonso, the actor who portrays him) deserved a whole series with several seasons (the second is already in production).
In the first season, Berlin and his gang plan the heist of their lives: 44 million euros worth of jewels in Paris. Unexpected events, love stories, master plans, brilliant improvisations… And of course, the protagonist’s unique charm makes the series an entertaining experience.
Other great actors featured in this series include Tristán Ulloa, Michelle Jenner, and Begoña Vargas.
- Bank Under Siege (Asalto al Banco Central)
And now, let’s go for another series about thieves and master plans.
This five-episode miniseries is set during the assault on the Central Bank of Barcelona on May 23, 1981, three months after the attempted coup of February 23. Eleven masked men entered the bank and held more than 200 hostages, threatening to kill them if the government did not release Lieutenant Colonel Tejero and three other individuals responsible for the failed coup of February 23.
The story revolves around Maider Garmendia, a young journalist (played by María Pedraza) who investigates the events in real time, while developing a hypothesis about what really happened.
If you enjoyed the series “Money Heist” (La Casa de Papel), “Assault on the Central Bank” will not disappoint.

Something different among the best shows for learning Spanish
In this review of the best shows for learning Spanish in 2025, we have seen series based on real events, series that are adaptations of novels, comedies… Let’s now look at two more gems so that you have plenty (and good) to choose from.
- Two Graves (Dos Tumbas)
The first compelling reason for this series is that it’s written by Jorge Díaz, Antonio Mercero, and Agustín Martínez, aka “Carmen Mola,” the original pseudonym behind which these three geniuses, winners of the 2021 Planeta Prize, work (and it was then that the rest of us mortals learned that Carmen Mola was actually three men).
The series “Two Graves” tells the story of a courageous grandmother, Isabel (played by Kiti Mánver), who, two years after the disappearance of her granddaughter and her friend under mysterious circumstances, launches her own investigation to exact justice in a relentless pursuit of truth and revenge.
Another of the great actors who appears in the series is Álvaro Morte, in the role of Rafael Salazar, the father of the second missing girl.
- Muertos SL
It’s a dark comedy series, and although it’s “not really my cup of tea” (as my Scottish students would say), it’s a hugely successful show that you might enjoy.
The lead actor is Carlos Aceres, a multifaceted artist who is also a singer and illustrator.
The series tells the story of Torregrosa Mortuary Ltd., a family business, where Nieves, the owner’s widow, becomes the manager after her husband’s death. Nieves’ daughters want to close the mortuary and open a gym. The deceased owner’s right-hand man, Dámaso, wants to take over the business and become the new manager. Adding to all the entanglements, conspiracies, and manipulations within the business (all presented with a comedic touch) is the competition from the new Transitus Mortuary Ltd.
An interesting aspect of this series is that it manages to challenge the prejudices surrounding death, grief, and the seriousness associated with the funeral home industry, giving a dark humour twist to the business.
And that concludes our list of the best shows for learning Spanish in 2025.

Passive learning of Spanish
When you watch a series in its original version, or when you listen to a podcast in Spanish, or watch a short YouTube video in Spanish… you’re “absorbing” the language, you’re relaxed, letting yourself be carried away by the story, the plot, the theme… It’s as if, somehow, the language itself (in this case, Spanish) takes a back seat and what matters is the story, the characters, what’s going to happen…
This is passive language learning, which is great for improving your listening comprehension (that is, understanding native speakers) and also for learning and becoming familiar with colloquial expressions.
I don’t know about you, but I have at least three series from this list that I haven’t seen yet and that I’m going to watch in the coming weeks.
And you?
Are you up for watching one of these series to practice your Spanish while enjoying the show at the same time?
